“I love you, I support you, and I salute you” were the remarks of former Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino in a video addressed to federal immigration agents last week. In the 30-second video, Bovino, standing in front of Mount Rushmore, praised the “mean green machine” and emphasized his support for ICE, alongside their actions in Minneapolis and across the country.
The over-the-top video has gone viral in recent days, serving as an emblem of the administration’s approach to law enforcement.
Following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti earlier this year, Bovino was removed from his role in leading President Donald Trump‘s intense immigration crackdown in Minnesota. He has now returned to his original post in California.
Bovino, a lifelong member of law enforcement and border patrol agent, has been heavily criticized for his militaristic tactics in executing large-scale deportation operations. During his time as commander, he has led anti-immigrant raids in major cities including Los Angeles, Chicago and Minneapolis. In his video addressing federal agents, Bovino referred to the presidents on Mt. Rushmore as the “original turn and burn,” a reference to his method of moving quickly into a city, conducting mass arrests and detainments, and then leaving.
Bovino has assumed a largely public-facing role, serving as the figurehead for many of Trump’s immigration policies and decisions. Ironically, Bovino’s family migrated to the United States within the last century. He was highly critical of Biden’s immigration policies and has praised Trump for his intense border security.
Trump’s Border Czar Tom Homan, replaced Bovino in overseeing operations within Minnesota, amid growing tensions. Since the killings of United States citizens Alex Pretti and Renee Good, immigration enforcement chiefs and officers have encountered fierce backlash and spirited opposition.
The president’s decision to remove Bovino from his leadership position in Minneapolis could be a last-ditch effort to contain the negative public reaction.
