Many of Rep. Nancy Mace‘s (R-South Carolina) former staffers shared their concerns regarding the South Carolina congresswoman’s mental health after a series of odd public outbursts.

Late last month, the House Ethics Committee started an investigation into the allegations against the congresswoman.

In a New York Magazine profile, one of Mace’s ex-staffers said that the “best thing for her is to no longer be in the media all the time, and to enjoy private life outside of electoral politics.”

Other former staffers said they believe the congresswoman’s career is essentially over and that she has destroyed relationships with most of her political allies, including President Donald Trump.

“Something’s broken,” another ex-staffer claimed in regard to Mace’s mental health. “The motherboard’s fried. We’re short-circuiting somewhere.”

The former staffer said that when she joined Mace, she seemed like a breath of fresh air for the political world, but “after six months, [she] was like, ‘Man, this is one of the worst people I’ve ever met.”

The profile also features various other anecdotes describing controversial episodes involving Mace, including requests for liquor after midnight to continue parties at her home.

“Look, when I worked for her, our poor scheduler was getting calls at two o’clock in the morning to come bring her bottles of tequila,” one former staffer said.

Others had been told to do housework, including cleaning various properties she rented out on Airbnb.

On top of this, some staffers had to make burner accounts online to defend her on social media.

In one incident, she instructed a staffer to go on Reddit forums about the “hottest women in Congress” to increase her standing.

“She would make staffers cry,” one staffer added. “She would threaten to fire them, take their money away, not give them raises, not to give them days off, religious days.”

“The closer you get to her, the harder she messes up your brain,” another said. “It’s a classic story of ‘never meet your heroes.’”

In November 2025, Mace faced controversy after she cursed at and berated police officers at the Charleston International Airport in South Carolina.

Mace is currently seeking the GOP nomination for South Carolina governor.
