Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) is laying the foundation for a 2028 presidential bid, and President Donald Trump and members of his administration are furious with the senator.
Once a key ally to the administration, Hawley has been increasingly more likely to split with MAGA stances on issues like abortion and war powers.
The senator has long backed more extreme positions, like the false claim that the 2020 presidential election was “rigged” and was famously photographed with his fist in the air on Jan. 6, 2021, at the U.S Capitol riot.
During Trump’s second term, Hawley has increasingly opposed the president, presumably to pave the way for a 2028 presidential bid, drawing the administration’s ire.
Most recently, he sided with Democrats pressing to limit U.S. presence in Venezuela.
Hawley backpedaled and withdrew his Democratic support after receiving a reprimanding by Trump, along with other Republicans who took the same stance.
The bipartisan actions do not end there, with Hawley criticizing members of the Trump administration, like Mehmet Oz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
He also wrote an op-ed for the New York Times that condemned the “Big Beautiful Bill” championed by Trump.
Hawley backed a bill that would block the president and vice president from participating in trading stocks, as well as any sitting member of Congress. He objected to Trump’s initiative to preempt state-level AI regulations and pushed for the release of the Epstein files.
Most notably, and to the shock of many Republicans, Hawley has disclosed private conversations between himself and Trump on his social media.
This has all bewildered Trump, as Hawley was once a close ally of his. Trump has reportedly become furious with the senator.
