In an exclusive interview with FRANCE 24, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte discussed the evolving role of Europe in global security, emphasising that the alliance is stronger today than it was a year ago. Reflecting on NATO’s transformation, Rutte highlighted how the leadership of U.S. President Donald Trump, particularly his push for higher defence spending, played a crucial role in reshaping the alliance’s priorities.

Rutte also noted Europe’s growing responsibility within NATO, stressing that nations are increasingly taking charge of their own defence. However, he reiterated that the U.S. remains deeply anchored in NATO, which continues to be vital for the security of Europe and the Atlantic. On the war in Ukraine, Rutte stressed the urgency of providing more support, acknowledging that the current pace of aid remains insufficient.

As NATO faces new challenges, Rutte’s remarks underscored the strategic shift that has strengthened the alliance in the face of Russian aggression and growing global tensions.
